Thank you, George Couch!
by charonsdog ini just thought i'd share this story from my past.. back in the 80s i remember the big problem seemed to be about music.
(today, it's tight pants, i guess) the organization, society, whatever they were calling themselves, were always going on about the music we listened to.
disco, heavy metal, the whole "backwards masking" thing...couldn't escape hearing or reading about how satan was corrupting us unless we were listening to kingdom melodies or elevator music.. i was assigned to wtf in the late 80s and remember one of the articles stating that "young people know that the rhythm of rock music is the rhythm of sexual intercourse.

It saddens me to know that marriages break up because of religion and the blame, whose fault it is ?
by smiddy3 ina jehovah`s witness couple who have been married for many years and some with children of various ages and have been serving in their congregation meeting attendance, fs and bible studies with their children for many years .. and then one of them begins to have doubts about what they are being taught and what they actually are supposed to believe now that some changes have been made with nu-lite.. the doubts grow and then the the use of the internet to investigate further some of the claims of the gb/wt religion .. with the wealth of information available on the www it now becomes impossible to continue to be an active member of the jehovah`s witness religion without being an utter hypocrite .
you no longer believe them anymore that they alone are gods chosen people in this day.. however your spouse does not see things the way you do not at all and after many months of arguments bickering threats the ultimatum is something like if you don`t believe what i believe that you have left jehovah we can`t live together anymore ,i want a divorce unless you come to your senses.. who is the one here breaking up the marriage ?.
isn`t it in the majority of cases the jw who ends the marriage ?

Some marriages are not that good to start. Separation is supposed to be the path for "spiritual endangerment". I think that elders who give an approval or turn a blind eye often want into the pants of the wife, even if they cannot find their way clear.
A marriage based only on religion is not usually that good, what is needed is a common background, common goals, and being grown up.

It takes 3 months to build up blood after surgery, more or less. Surgery seldom or never "fixes" things, the hoped for outcome is a less severe malady. I really do wish the writers of this could get some minor surgery, like maybe a prostectomy and have to P in a diaper or down a tube. I fast forwarded a couple times, no way could I stomach a wholehalf hour of that. Anyway, like most of their stuff, the points needed to be made could be done in 5 to 10 minutes with a better understanding of what was needed.
The new service arrangements in small groups makes interaction less, and a lot of the group leaders are clueless. So that is just who you want to check in with.
I once heard an elder say that "so and so" in the hospital should be doing phone work, talking to everyone, because all he was doing was lying in bed. Next they will trot out the 90 year old pioneer story and wonder why someone else who died at 66 isn't still getting in the hours.

Why the meetings are boring and uninspiring
by UnshackleTheChains ineach individual may have their own views as to why they feel the meetings are boring and uninspiring.
in my case i find the midweek meeting so, because of the constant emphasis on pitching watchtower literature.
its just monotonous and one big yawn.. i watch other christian faiths where they open up a chapter of the bible and discuss it's contents.

Nobody understood the Revelation book. And if you did pick up anything from it, it is now "wrong".
Meetings are not animated, entertaining, and if you get a monotone speaker or one who is wordy it is even worse. For kids and people who work it louses up the sleep.
And it is not 1 1/2 hours, you gotta dress up, travel, be there 20 minutes early for duties (remember no rules). Same for service, waste a whole morning and call on 2 or 3 people, then spill McD on your tie. Rember the comment about doing family worship for 4 hours? Because that is how long it used to take to do a bookstudy.

Were visits to the library an important part of your childhood?
by compound complex ingreetings, fellow bibliophiles:.
i remember how sad i was, as a little child, when our beloved carnegie library was razed (unsafe, structurally).
the same tragedy occurred when we moved to a new town and that similar architectural treasure was demolished to put up a new and gleaming building of steel and glass.

Grew up with a Carnegie library. Loved the old architecture. Mine is still there but I don't live close now. The bigger libraries have become hangouts for homeless, as long as they read and don't sleep.

Well now any new abodes will be resistered on some other name. I am sure this board is read. Look how they suddenly dropped "apparently" and some other key words.
Any 14 year old girl housekeepers? I thought it funny you could find their names on the voter list.

Singing todays WT
by road to nowhere inthe jist was that we all should sing.
then the first 6 or 8 paragraphs describe how early bible accounts have trained and set aside musicians to do the singing while everyone else listened.. the songs they have put out have no soul, rhythm, or soothing melodies as a whole.
the old hymns are some real music, even if you don't agree with the "teachings".. there is no admission of poetry using archaic language at times for affect or to add to the rhyme, they have to have everything agree with the grey bible.. anyone speak foreign languages?

Anyone speak foreign languages? How butchered are some of the translations? I figure they have to be to make the ideaology fit and to fit the verses.

The suffering of Christ story told at memorial is identical to what many churches tell, right down to the explanations given by experts and doctors.
There are more I can't think of right now. It is like there is a master source of ideas for sermons and ideas somewhere on the web.

committees
by dogisgod ini have had some conversations with ex-jw women and i am more than a little concerned at how, if a female, is treated in committee meetings.
it sure seems (i experienced this when i was young) that the elders have a commonality in trying to create such shame and sexual guilt (especially where none is deserved) that it is beyond abuse.
i know there are a lot of former elders here.

Stories!! I am a dirty old man too and want to hear them. Not really. A little kindness goes a long way. Lots of us were "immoral", when in reality we were just easing into marriage. Without the rules I would have taken in, cared for, cherished, and valued a certain girl sooner. THEIR so called spirituality had/has little or nothing to do with the success of this marriage.

Who Do JWs Fear The Most? Top Five
by Fred Franztone init's a fear-based religion, at its core.
jws fear many things, but what or who do they fear the most?

The fear is not of apostates, most of can reason on our own. The fear is being found out; leading to loss of family, friends, and we do worry about the pain our leaving can give to still in ones.
There is also a fear of being 'poor" because of not planning better for something that wasn't ever coming.
The realization of death, not so much in itself, but the worry about the loved ones who may need us. And there is always something I want to do.
I did get a decent retirement if not extravagant, and always maintained life insurance for the family, wife in particular.
